Any handy little tips, tricks or aids to help determine fly sizes?
I have a box of flies divided by small/smaller/tiny/teeny/dang near microscopic
If someone said "tie on a sz22 pheasant tail" for instance, I would be able to find a pheasant tail but when it came to size I would go with a tiny one. But that could be a size 20 or 24 for all I know
Only way I know is to take a known size fly and try to match it up with like sized ones, even that way it is difficult to differentiate the smaller ones
I believe Tiemco (for example) has a hook sizing chart that you can print that comes out true-to-size. You could compare your flies to the chart to get a rough guesstimate. But depending on the hook brand and style there can be some discrepancies. Eventually you will learn the size where you can make an educated guess and be within one hook size plus or minus...... handling various hook sizes/brands enough and you’ll know what they are.
