Blue River 11/13/20.
Since the Lower Fork is under new management and rule changes I decided to do a scouting mission on the Blue River. Both are about 3 hours from my home.
I hit Scotty’s at 10:30 and met Jason to get information on the park and stream conditions. The catch and keep portion of the stream is being stocked each week alternating from 26 different locations. The catch and release area gets stocked twice a season by the pound, not by the number of fish. The streams water level is at an all-time low.
A drive through the park revealed that it was packed with campers and fisherman. Stream access looked limited and difficult to walk. I didn’t feel like fishing in a crowd that day. I headed back to Scotty’s for lunch and a new plan.
A short drive took me to the catch and release walk-in area. Air temps were in the high 50’s so I elected to pack in my waders and boots. It’s a 30 minute easy walk. I walked to the end of the trail and geared up near a waterfall. I fished above the fall without success. There was a fisherman on the waterfall itself so I waited for him to leave. We talked and he indicated he had had an excellent day. I climbed through a root wad to get to the water. I saw a good seam in the plunge pool and started there.
I had trashed my two fly rig already so I started with a 1/180 olive drab marabou, it’s my go to fly. The first 3 casts resulted in nice fish. I broke the hook on the jig while shaking off a fish so I made a change to work the speed and depth of water better. I moved to a 1/124 in the same color. With the change it was game on. I could high stick that seam and get bit on almost every pass. It was getting late, I had a 1/80 mop fly on another rod so I gave it a run with the same result. It was raining periodically so I opted to leave and made the walk out. It was a good first day.
