Fly fishing Practice

I was given a fly rod for Christmas. (did not ask for it  ) Anyway are there any lures for testing/learning how to use it in the grass, street, pond. For a regular fishing rod I would use a small weight and cast down the street.

A piece of brightly colored yarn (strike indicator yarn) works best for lawn casting. For a new beginner, I would recommend a 7-foot, 4X tapered leader with the yarn tied in by a slip knot.
