I drove up to Colorado on Thurs for a job interview (on Friday) and was able to squeeze in some fishing in between.
The forecast had a minor winter warning for snow which I kept an eye on carefully. By the time I got to C. Springs, I called the fly shop in Deckers for a weather update--light snow and roads just starting to get wet--no hazards. Once past Woodland Park, the light snow began but the roads were still dry.
I had a spot chosen upstream of Deckers that I hadn't fished before. After I geared up, I was able to fish for about 30 mins before the snow really started coming down hard. The flows were low and I hooked one nice fish that ran then popped the hook. I decided to bail before I might get stuck. Pine Creek road to Highway 67 was starting to get really sketchy--there's a part with 15% grade that's no joke. My AWD truck barely climbed that section and there was a guy that was stuck just shy of the top. I pulled over, got out and pushed him up. I had left just in time.
That night we drank PBRs and watched Predator.
After my interview Friday, I decided to stay away from the mountains and headed south to Pueblo. Only a couple of anglers were around and they soon left for a different stretch of river. I had plenty of water all to myself. I caught my first and best fish of the day about 10 minutes into the day. It took a Medallion Midge. I nymphed some more then noticed an increase in rising fish. BWO duns were floating down the river and the fish were keying in on them.
I cut off my nymph rig, increased my leader length to about 12 feet that terminated in 6X. I tied on a size 22 Parachute Adams BWO and had some good times catching and missing fish for the rest of the day. All fish were rainbows.
I left at 3pm for the 2 hr drive back to Denver.
