Greetings all. Just joined and wanted to introduce myself. Been a fly fisher and tyer for +15 yrs. I fish in Arkansas on the White and Norfork most frequently and several winter trout fisheries around Oklahoma, such as the Blue and lake Watonga, and numerous warmwater fisheries. I used to fish the LMF often before these great floods and intend to fish the river more. I fish in New Mexico, Wyoming, and Montana and anywhere that has fish. I like smallmouth bass as much as trout. I tie my own flies exclusively. I like to fish soft hackles and dries the most but will tie on a technical nymph rig anytime. Streamers rock. I like sharing the flies I tie online with other fishermen because, well, my wife just thinks they're "cute." Looking forward to these discussions. I fish alone most often and I'm pretty selective about who I fish with; good fishing partners are hard to come by.

Don't fish New Mexico. The San Juan will torment you. Or the Animus, in Colorado. Ain't nothing in it. Anyway, welcome aboard. I plan to be fishing the Norfork, maybe also the White, next November on my and my wife's annual vacation trip. Do you wade the Norfork when you go, kayak? It might be obvious from my slightly bitter tone that my trip this last November, to Durango, did not go so well fishing-wise, but oh, well. It was a wonderful time with my family.
My question of the day is, what do you use on the LMF for a black caddis emerger?

Jonbo, thanks for the welcome. Funny you mention the Animas- I fished there a little bit on my honeymoon in April and didn't even have a bite! Nada. I wonder if that massive heavy metal spill had anything to do with it? The river still had bugs in it when I was there, so it must have survived the spill. I have not yet fished the SJ. Would like to. For black caddis, I don't have a particular pattern specifically for the black caddis, but I do fish soft hackles when they hatch along with midges. I tied up a new pattern the other day for swinging soft hackles during a midge hatch that would work for the black caddis.

I'll post pics of some patterns I fish during black caddis activity in the fly tying board

I saw several trout in the Animus, looked like 11" stocker-type rainbows, but couldn't get any interested. The locals told me that it's hard to get them to do anything in the winter. They're too lethargic, I guess. Anyway, no one else but me was fishing. That told me something, but I couldn't resist trying since I was right there.

You asked about the Norfork- I wade on low water and take canoe to get to all the good spots. If you wade only, try the riffle and run just downstream of the end of the campground by the dam, as well as the c&r

Hankinsfly, welcome to the board. I'm sure you will enjoy the New and improving lmfr. I also fish the Norfolk and any river pond or puddle that I can cast into between Washington state and Maine. Wife and I were just up at Genes on the Norfolk. Where do you stay at?

I prefer to camp but if my wife goes and it's cold out, we like Gene's, especially in the winter. Right on the river and the price is right. Also considering Dominic's new property (the bearded dude at Two Rivers Fly Shop). Look it up on his website.
Thanks for the welcome. Looking forward to getting back down there. I just started fishing the White and Norfork any chance I get and haven't been to the LMF like I used to. Gonna have to go!

Hello Hankinsfly! I live in OKC and am curious about fishing the White River sometime but anxious about going by myself to a river I've never fished and one that sounds like it could be dangerous with the flows. I am the local, in-training, Fisheries Biologist here doing a study on the Lower Mountain Fork. Hope to see you around. Greetings all. Just joined and wanted to introduce myself. Yeah let's get together and fish. I have a friend from OSU who I believe majored in fisheries management or biology. He landed a gig in the Sierras monitoring certain watersheds. The flow schedules in Arkansas are, in my experience, fairly reliable, but I know they are off completely at times. I'll shoot you message and see if you're available next time I get out. You're upcoming survey of the LMF sounds interesting. Only place I've seen river otters in the wild.

Yeah, there's a few Beavers down there too. I've seen their work but haven't seen them yet.

I was fishing in Z2 when one of those river otters popped up on a rock beside me. I thought Bigfoot had me!
