How has the fishing been lately? Has the bridge build killed the fishing below there? Hope everyone has been doing well. Been working lots and about ready to take a break and catch a trout or two I'm sure some of you would get a good laugh watching me whip flies around if you saw me on the river will be up around Feb 8 or so

Todd and I fished Saturday afternoon and Sunday. They didn't stock last week so it was pretty slow. They shut the water off Saturday at 11:00 to replace the valve. Water was back on around 5:00 and things were back to normal when we returned Sunday morning. Todd tried a green wolly bugger this time and netted several really nice ones in the 18" range. I believe the fly shop has more on order.

I decided it was too windy for work today (but not too windy for fishing ) so I drove down and was pleasantly surprised. Started below the swim beach bridge just as 3 guys were leaving, and then another guy came in just as I started fishing. Caught a 15 incher within a few minutes and lost a smaller one shortly after that. Got tired of fighting the wind and tricky currents there so headed to EH and found it empty except for 1 guy at the upper end. Stopped at my favorite spot in the middle section and caught a few there until I had to wade across to get unhung, so I moved downstream about 25 yards to give that spot a rest. Quickly caught a few smaller fish and then a beautiful 18 inch hen. Never caught a bunch in one spot, but every time I changed locations I was able to catch a few. Wound up with about 20 fish landed, including the 18, a 16, and a few 15's. All were caught on my favorite z-midge in a size #18. The wind was horrific and tough to cast in with my limited skills, but I do believe it made the fish less spooky and helped the bite. Not my best day -- but well worth the trip!!

Wow! that is awesome Danimal! My son and I went up there on Sunday, and we only saw one guy catch one. We tried hare's ears, soft hackles and even threw a Parachute adams, which did provoke a slap once. All in evening hole. We tried earlier at Powerhouse, but couldn't even get a nudge. I tried a few z-midges, but they must not have been your favorite. We found out about the stand still water from the day before just after we decided to quit for the day. Of course, I am a greenhorn, and don't know what I am doing. I was so afraid of the possibilities of messing with any of the redds, but I don't even know if the spawn is over. Ranger1965 did well above too! Can't hardly wait until I get to come up again!

If you could afford one of the fly shop guides for at least 1/2 day I would do so, if not plenty of us will chime in. You actually picked a down year for the fishing because of the construction and valve problems. IMO a great trip/time even with things going on though.

Mid February is BWO, midge, and still egg patterns. Valves are supposedly fixed, so flows should be good. Depends on your skill level, wading level, and expectations as to where you fish.
My advice would be to take a few hours to read the last couple months of stuff posted on this board. Lots of good info. Second piece of advice would be to hire a Beavers Bend Fly Shop guide for a day. Invaluable if you have plans on visiting in the future.
I did it backward, too. I learned to flyfish in Colorado and then found out about Beavers Bend. The LMF isn't Colorado, but its better than anything else within a 3 hour drive. At least until the spring white bass runs......

We get in evening of the 15th and leave on Sunday afternoon. I’ve grown up around the water. Noodling with friends in high school to being around grand lake the past 12 years. Tube egg fishing for trout. on the white etc. I’m 6’6 so I can get into a little deeper water. As to fly fishing took a guide on the south plate outside of Denver last year and fell in love with fly fishing. I’ve become a you tube and Orvis video junkie now but definitely a novice

Everyday is a good day from some "Peanut Butter Jelly Time". yeah David and I did pretty well. Always fun to fish in the stream. We also had one of the Bald Eagles fly overhead and land in a nearby tree to watch us fish. I have asked Ms Roberta to start holding a few of my favorite fly back so I can stay well supplied. I've only fished one fly since Nov....anyone need to buy some empty fly boxes? Maybe I should sell my dry flies too... Yes - hire a guide; consider how many days on the water per year you spend. Make every day count, waste none of them.

Any guide recommendations Ask for Cody. Not only did we catch quite a few fish but I also learned so much from him! Very positive, easy going and funny. For me, as a beginner, he did really well going over basics and a variety of techniques. If unavailable Peter might be ok. 😉 I also had the pleasure of meeting Jenny. She was gettin a little technical on me (which I thought was awesome) so if u wanna learn i think she'd be good.

Only in the red zone, I generally go barbless everywhere since it's so much less of a hassle I'm case of user issues.

Evening Hole and Zone 2 are barbless hook areas. There are red signs that denote this. Spillway Creek, downstream of Evening Hole Bridge to the Powerhouse outlet and Zone 3 are not restricted on hook type.

A Colorado guide showed me to take needle nose pliers and smash the barb down. what are your thoughts.

Yes. A little squeeze will close the barb right up. I have a Dr. Slick Barb Plier for that exact purpose. It’s basically a needle nose plier without the little serrations on the faces of the jaws. It also has an umbilical cord so I don’t lose it if (when) I drop it in the water.
If anyone is interested, I believe what I have is Dr Slick Item # PBC5.
