Well my wife makes some killer banana bread. Anybody ever camped at Dogwood? Dogwood: yes, sorta. I have just crashed and slept in my jeep if I got there late. If I am getting up early to fish and get in late, that's my MO. Honestly, the sites are plenty spread out and can accomodate 2-3 tents easily. Not sure what the reg or "norm" is on how many tents to a spot. Nice fire pits. They have outhouses....typical outhouses. I enjoy tent camping, but worried about Jeff and Turfdawg. I will prob go that route. Plus I might need the light to, to, to check the knots on my leaders, maybe. Seriously, if cabin fills up, I will gladly tent camp. I just spent 8 days sleeping in a tent on CO.

I always sleep better in a tent in the woods. Don't worry about Golferjeff and Turfdawg. Golferjeff- why are you always telling me where to pitch my tent? 😂

I'd like to do something like that. I have a travel trailer and 2 grown sons. Keep us posted. Down by zone II gets my vote so we can use the trailer.

Hey Schrederman. Fern Campground, up toward EH, adjacent to the wintertime Day Use Area spot has modern sites suitable for camper-trailers. Is it open in wintertime?

Well, at least you don't have to poo in a half-nasty outhouse! That's gotta be worth something.

I spent the last two nights at Beavers Bend tenting it at Dogwood. Had it all to myself on Thursday night. Then the Boy Scouts moved in ... For what it's worth, I think the Dogwood sites are a little flatter, dryer, and further up from the river than they are over at Hickory. The picnic tables are the sturdy concrete ones and all seemed to be in pretty good shape. The outhouses are about the same as over at Hickory though. I did make one trip over to the bathhouse at Fern. It has electricity and running water which is a huge step up but it could really use a good pressure washing. I looked into the showers and decided to go for a dip at the swim beach instead. Sadly, the showers over there weren't working. In my opinion, though, for wintertime tenting I would cast my vote for Cypress. It's a tent area amongst the newer RV park areas. And the bathhouse down there is FAR superior to any other one I've seen in the park. It even has four private shower rooms on the end of it! For 50 cents, you get a 3 minute shower and each additional quarter gets you 1.5 minutes more. That felt pretty amazing after a few 90 degree sunny days and some really humid nights.

Good to know, thanks.
The bathroom 'facilities' at Hickory and other spots really, really, really need to be torn down and redone.
The park should take facilities found at say, Cimarron Canyon as an example. The park rangers in NM are at each of the sites every morning and clean the bathroom, empty the dumpsters and restock the TP and such.
BB needs better garbage bins too. Too many critters get to the trash too easily.
These are the biggest reasons I haven't brought my family tent camping there because it's disigusting.

I always bring an extra pair of flip-flops for shower purposes when using public showers -- keeps my feet off the phunk..

Good news about winter camping is there are few other people out there, so finding a spot should be easy. If we can get all our tents (and rv's?) nearby and convene for dinner, that would be cool. I wish I could get my uncle out there with his chuck wagon! Chicken fried steaks at trout camp would be awesome. We better just stick with tacos and soup and burgers and brats, and Smallfry's banana pudding! Why am I constantly talking about food?

hey uh....I teach middle school Science and I am really interested in reading how mirvc and Darrell conduct this outhouse smell test. Pls share the methodology with all of us. Some on this thread may want to participate..
Personally, I trust you, I will go with the herd on this one.

I can handle the smell in the Hickory crapper. It's the spiders and the poo on the walls that get me.

Would have thought those middle schoolers would teach you some rhetoric! The smell test should NEVER be performed at the outhouses in Dogwood, Hickory, or Grapevine. I actually hold my breath if I venture in. The bathhouse over by Cypress is legit.

Rhetoric? Dude I am ready to see a rubric and confirm we followed the Sci Method! Seriously, I haven't been to BB so much that I have enjoyed the outhouses very much. I will admit this: I typically drive into H-town and call home, get a bite and take care of 'things'. It's a choice I make and I have no regrets....

I'd take my house-in-a-bag any day over a cabin or hotel. I sleep better. That there is my castle.

I actually prefer the Armadillo campground on Stevens Gap Rd., especially if my sons are with me. We get full hookups there and don't have to contend with full gray-water tanks, or filthy bathrooms. If it's just me I can go about anywhere I can get water and power. As we get closer to this, I'll figure out what I'm going to do. Sure sounds like fun. I would like to meet a few of you.

Yes, it was. Nice, clean campground with hot showers. Too close to 412 bridge, lots of noise when a car goes over the bridge, but still a nice campground.
